Valentine Day's Trends: Are we searching for the same things we are talking about?

by Blake Sunshine on February 14, 2009

According to the New York Times the days of fancy Valentine’s Days are over. Money is tight, times are hard and people are looking for ways to save money wherever they can.  Since people use the internet to basically find everything I started wondering on Valentine’s day people were looking for cheap date ideas and value jewelry. Even more specifically though on Valentine’s Day, are people searching for the same topics they are talking about?

I went on to Google Trends and Twitter Search and took a look at what the Valentine’s Day chatter was.

The top ten Google search for today were:

1. Becky Hammon

2. Bill Russell

3. Bill Laimbeer

4. Allen Iverson Haircut

5.  Slam dunk contest

6. Allen Iverson cut his hair

7. Pushing tin

8. Applebees

9. Olive Garden

10. Applebee’s Menu

So not exactly what I thought, but three of the results were exactly what I expected: Applebee’s, Olive Garden and Applebee’s Menu. Times are hard and people are going to less expensive restaurants.

The top ten trending topics on Twitter were:

1. V-day

2. Blind date

3. Caroline

4. Dollhouse

5. AS09

6. Heart stories

7. Derrick Rose

8. Bad movie club

9. He’s just not that into you

10. IPhone

While people may be searching for less expensive Valentine’s Day options on Google, they sure aren’t talking about them on Twitter. In fact people are barely talking about Valentine’s Day at all, very interesting.

Thank you for humoring my little trend experiment, what were you searching for on Valentine’s Day?
