SXSW Queso Recommendations

by Blake Sunshine on February 18, 2009

I know a lot of people are coming in to Austin for SXSW (March 13-22) and since I won’t be here to join in on the fun that week I want to grace you with my Austin queso recommendations.

Here is my top five for queso in the live music capital of the world:

5. Magnolia Cafe Mag Mud Queso- Magnolia Cafe is located on S. Congress and is open 24 hours a day. So after your last SXSW party head on over and order the Mag Mud Queso. It has queso, avocado, black beans and pico de gallo. It is deliciousness in a bowl. Don’t even bother ordering food, just grab some chips and enjoy the queso.

4. Trudy’s- Along with an amazing Mexican martini, Trudy’s makes an amazing queso. It is just plain old cheese dip but for some reason it just tastes delicious. Slightly spicy and well seasoned, Trudy’s queso makes for a wonderful appetizer.

3. Kerbey Lane- Also open 24 hours a day, Kerbey Lane is right near the UT campus and has a very “keep austin weird” atmosphere. Order the Kerbey Queso, which has guacamole and pico de gallo covered in melted cheese. The service is kind of slow, so try and go during an off hour for the best dining experience.

2. Matt’s El Rancho- Just a week ago me and two of my roommates finished of an entire large queso before we even got our meals, THAT is how good the queso at Matt’s is. The restaurant is huge and gets very busy, but the queso is good enough to brave the potentially long wait.

1. El Arroyo- My FAVORITE queso in Austin lives in El Arroyo located on west fifth street. They also have amazing happy hour food and drink specials to go along with their delicious queso. It is creamy and spicy, a perfect combination.

I’ll be following this post up closer to SXSW with my Margarita recommendations, but until then where is your favorite queso in Austin served?
