Our six-word memoirs

by Blake Sunshine on January 15, 2009

I was looking for a book on Amazon.com a few days ago when I slipped down the page to the “customers who bought this item also bought” section. The first book in the section, was a book that I had seen on the news a few days ago and it is called Not quite what I was planning: Six-word memoirs by writers famous and obscure. The writer of this book has just written a new book called Six-word memoirs of love and heartbreak and the book got me thinking about how difficult it can be to tell your story, especially if you are limiting yourself to 6 words.

Some of my favorite six-word memoirs I have found online so far are:

My first concert Zappa, explains everything.

Wasn’t born a redhead, fixed that.

Still lost on road less traveled.

First christmas, gave me a toaster.

I still practice my Oscar speech.

You can write and submit your own on the Smith Magazine website, where they have a bunch of different six-word memoir topics.

I wrote a few of my own six-word memoirs and they are listed below, please feel free to comment or tweet (@blakesunshine) your own six-word memoir. For me, it turned out to be a pretty difficult, but fun, writing exercise.

City girl in Texas, said “Yeehaw.”

No new year’s resolutions, live instead.

Essi sincero e vai con Dio. (Italian for, “Be Sincere and go with G0d”)
