I like Twitter too much

by Blake Sunshine on August 9, 2009

I have a problem, and my problem scares me.

I like Twitter too much. In fact, I may even love Twitter. Which may not seem like a problem to you, but for a social media advocate it’s a huge problem. What happens when Twitter becomes the next Myspace? And I didn’t mean to say “if” it becomes the next MySpace, I said “when.”

I always want to do more with Twitter. I want to share information, start conversations and find interesting people. But what will happen when suddenly Twitter is creepy, or Twitter is only cool for bands and porn stars? Will I stop using it? Will there be a new popular social media platform? Am I being too much of a platform chaser by putting all of my eggs in the twitter basket?

What is a girl to do?!?

I think you already have a lot going for you as far developing your own brand and reputation on the web with your blog. It’s a lot like when cell phones came along and you were worried about the platform changing. It’s the message not the media platform that matters. If you are worth calling people will still call you on a cell phone! It’s not the call it’s what you contribute when you communicate with them. That’s why twitter spamers and those that are riding on the media and not a solid message will really suffer.

Now, I do want to caveat this and say if your message is the platform then you might be in trouble, but it seems to me that your message is: “Millinials use the net in different ways and due to our experiences with social networking we hold fundamentally different views on how the world should operate”

Is this your message? If so, I think you are okay.

Noah,

Thanks for your comment! I think you are right, if you have a great message to share when Twitter is popular you will still have one when the next platform or network exists.

You should hire noahmclark for your PR work – nice message statement!

I “love” Twitter, too. I’m not a Millennial – I have two millennial children – but I am deeply intregrated into the social media universe. I think Twitter will change through time and possible go the way to MySpace and because we have been *here* we can go there – wherever ‘there’ is.
