Being a freelancer has a lot of challenges. If you are a freelance technical writer, but you can’t find an engineering company who needs a freelance writer than you are out of luck. And vice versa, if a company needs someone to write a press release, but they can’t find a freelancer writer than they too are out of luck. People want freelancers to make their lives easier and freelancers want customers so they can perfect their craft and pay their bills.
Being a great freelancer can be easier than you think though. Last night I walked out to my car and found a flyer for the Mobile Mercedes Tech of Austin. Patrick Ekstrum is a traveling Mercedes technician (basically a car repair freelancer) who offers to fix your car anywhere and anytime you want him too.
Patrick has all of the qualifications of a great freelancer:
1. He reached out to me first- I didn’t have to spend time looking for him at all. He put a flyer on my car with all of the information I needed to know.
2. He is super qualified- He worked for two Mercedes dealerships and has been through their training program. He has also logged over 2,000 hours of car repair training.
3. He listed all of his services- All of the services he offers are listed up front, including how much he charges to come out and give an estimate.
Overall, he made it super easy to use him! Now let me clarify this post by saying that I have not used his services yet, but I probably will in the future. And do you know why? Car dealerships are outdated and inefficient. They make you wait for forever to bring your car again, make you wait again for your car to be down and charge you an insane amount of money to fix things. They are also only open from 9-5, also known as the most inconvenient hours to do anything when you work. But working with a freelancer is efficient and easy.

I’ve worked with a few freelancers and I find the best freelancers are focused on taking tasks on one at a time. Amazing freelancers can get a dozen deals a week. Its good to know your limits as a freelancers and do your best work.
