The Importance of Having a Team and My 23rd Year

I am a pretty independent girl. I live really, really far away from my family, I take care of myself and I don’t feel like I need to depend on anyone but myself. But this past weekend a bunch of my friends came in town for my birthday (that’s right, I’m 23 now) and it really reminded me the importance of having a team of supporters around you.

Just ask Rev Run (yes, I love Rev Run) who said, “Going solo can leave you SO LOW! With team there are no little i’s or big U’s, with Team T-ogether E-veryone A-chieves M-ore!” It may be cheesy but he is right, having a team lifts your spirits, and positions you to do more with your life. I’ve written before that Millennials are having a hard time growing up, and I think one of the hardest parts of growing up is realizing that you don’t really have to be so independent. Yes, you have to grow up. But growing up with a team around you is better and easier. (PS the image for this post is my team of birthday visitors!)

Now that my team is back in their respective cities, it’s time to figure out what I am going to do in my 23rd year. There are A LOT of things I want to do this year, so I think I will only share my top three with you all:

1. Take a writing class- I talk about doing this all the time, but I seriously am going to do it this year. Reaching this goal will benefit my blog readers and myself, which is the best of both worlds.

2. Be a better friend- This is a hard goal to reach because it’s really ambiguous, but I have a few ideas for how I can make it happen this year.

3. Travel to a new place outside of the US- This is one of my goals every year. Last year it was China, who knows where it will be this year!

Wish me luck in my 23rd year, I have a feeling I’m going to need it!

Happy (belated) birthday Blake! I think you are already a great writer – the tricky part is figuring out what you actually like to write ABOUT (that can always change, but it’s the biggest obstacle I have and continue to overcome).

I promised myself at the end of last year that I would make more time for the people that REALLY matter – it takes VERY little effort to really have a positive impact on someone’s day.

And traveling…yes, I am with you – both within and outside the US, I plan to do MUCH more of this throughout the second half of the year once we’re past the wedding.

Cheers to you – we’ll have to hold each other accountable to all of this. Hope you are doing great!

Matt! Thanks so much for the comment and the birthday wishes.
Figuring out what I want to write about is the hardest thing for me too, but I figured if I’m going to continue to write then I want to be damn good at it.
Talk to you soon!
