Millennials Make Mistakes

by Blake Sunshine on September 17, 2009

Those of you who follow sports (and probably those of you who don’t) know Vince Young. When I was a freshman at The University of Texas he lead the school to a stunning 41-38 victory over USC in the Rose Bowl. Vince Young was a legend and a National Championship winner. Everyone respected and admired him, and he was at the  top of his game.

He was drafted in to the NFL, but things went down hill from there. Since then he has been benched, depressed and it looks like he won’t be playing this season until he “earns his job back.”

You can imagine my surprise this morning when I read this article called, “Dad For a Day: Vince Young Surprises Steve McNair’s Sons.” Steve McNair was killed in July of this year, and Wednesday was “Dad’s Breakfast” at his kids school. This probably seems trivial to most people, but I can imagine that when you are 11 and 5 years old and your dad recently died that “Dad’s Breakfast” is a huge, painful deal. Vince Young surprised McNair’s kids by showing up as their dad for breakfast, and even handed out jerseys and autographs to all of the other kids. Vince Young has made some mistakes. But just like every Millennial, he has the opportunity to learn from his mistakes. Every Millennial has the opportunity to stand up and change the way people think and feel about them.

Today Vince Young stood up and changed the way I felt about him. For Millennials, and Vince Young, it’s never too late.

Way to go, Vince. There are things in life that are more important than a starting role on a pro football team. I am rooting for him both on and off the field now.

It’s always good to see celebrities/pro athletes acting like role models. This story affects more people than just Vince and the McNairs. Good for him! [Go Titans!]
