Five steps to branded Facebook page success

by Blake Sunshine on August 8, 2009

Every company and brand needs a Facebook page. And while it is easy to make a Facebook page, making a good Facebook page takes a lot of work. But every company and brand can have one.

Here are the five steps to branded Facebook page success:

1. Don’t skimp on the boxes- The “boxes” tab of your Facebook page is the most important section for any brand. It is completely customizable through drag and drop widgets and by writing your own HTML. You can include logos, photos, text and basically anything else you want to include. This is a great place for you to get across your brand’s point of view. At the very least, you should include photos of your brand’s products that link back to your website. You can also include links, videos and a discussion board. The more interactive you make the boxes tab the more likely you are to see Facebook users driving back to your website. A good example of this is from the Prime Wine and Spirits Facebook page below:

By just including a simple picture and explanation you can drive traffic back to your brand’s websites, and allow the conversation to grow beyond Facebook.

2. Don’t neglect your wall- Your wall is the center of your Facebook page and where your fans will land when they arrive. It is important to not only share relevant and timely updates with your fans, but also respond to questions asked by them. If you neglect your wall you are neglecting your fans.

3. Share your favorite pages- There is an amazing widget available for Facebook pages called “favorite pages.” This widget can live on your boxes tab or on your wall tab. It allows you to pick your favorite pages and share them with your fans. This is a great way to promote other parts of your business or your company’s related ventures. I grabbed this example widget from the Sun Microsystems fan page:

You can see above how they are really promoting sites that may be relevant to their fans.

4. Add albums- There are one billion photos uploaded to Facebook each month, which means that Facebook photo albums are more important than ever. Brands have an amazing opportunity to share photos with their fans, so it is important that you add albums of relevant photos (products, events, etc.) to your page.

5. Share news through notes- Notes are a underutilized tool on Facebook, but a great tool for brands to use. Notes are a great place to share news and information about your brand in a non-invasive way. By doing so, brands can share their point of view and respond to comments posed by their fans.

Follow these steps, and your brand’s Facebook page will certainly be on a path to success. Do you have any more recommendations for what brands can do on Facebook?

Hey Blake-

Thanks for this great post! I’ve bookmarked your blog. I’m just learning about the importance of social media and marketing. Like a lot of entrepenuers, I’ve made massive mistakes over the last few years, thinking if I’m good at what I do, that’s all I need to do, right? Wrong! I need to then become a great marketer! Yikes! It gave me hives for ages, but now I’m having more fun, got a blog, gonna do facebook, etc.

Thanks again for making facebook stuff easy and fun!

all the best,
KJ
