Why it's really important to know your CTA

I love watching The Today Show when I get ready for work in the morning. I think Matt is adorable and I love seeing the cute coats Ann and Meredith wear in chilly NYC. But most of all, I love seeing the people standing outside watching The Today Show.  If you are an avid Today Show watcher then you know that before Al does the weather he walks around and interviews some of the most interesting looking people in the audience. Today Al walked around and stopped at a guy wearing a shirt about Pneumonia. Al asked him, “What are you doing here today”? And the man answered, “We are trying to stop Pneumonia worldwide.”

Which is cool, except that the next question Al asked him was, “Where can people go to get more information”? I was thinking to myself that this guy just got SO LUCKY. Al was giving him a chance to share his call to action on a national morning show in front of a huge, huge audience. But the guy just stood there and said, “ummmm.” FAIL!

The guy could have said one of two things:

1. Google “World Pneumonia Day” for more information

2. Go to http://worldpneumoniaday.org/

But he didn’t know his CTA! He knew why he was there, but he couldn’t remember what he should tell people to do next. This got me thinking that in business, and in life, it is really, really important to know your CTA.

Who knows when you will suddenly find yourself on a national stage? Do you have your CTA ready to go?
