Millennials want to give up but they can't

by Blake Sunshine on December 11, 2009

Every other day I wake up and want to quit writing in my blog. The most common excuses I use to justify quitting my blog are that it’s not sustainable, it takes too much time,  no one finds value in it and I should be doing more projects from work at home instead of blogging. To sum it up, I wake up most days and I don’t want to fight to “keep” my blog.

But last night and again this morning I was reminded of two AMAZING millennials, who never ever gave up in the fight for what they wanted.

The first is Mark Herzlich, a football player from Boston College, who after being one of the top defensive players in the country was diagnosed with bone cancer.  He was determined to play football again so he went through chemo, trained in the weight room and raised more than $120,000 for cancer research. Did I mention he was going through chemo as he was doing this? Last night Herzlich won the Disney Spirit Award, which honors college football’s most inspirational player. I’m sure there were plenty of times when Herzlich didn’t want to train, didn’t want to “fight,” but now he is cancer free and working to build up his strength and hopefully one day play in the NFL. Herzlich is going to get the chance to live his dream.

Mark  Herzlich is one amazing Millennial. But don’t take my word for it, watch this awesome video about his fight.

The second amazing Millennial, who I saw this morning on the Today Show, is Bethany Hamilton. You may recognize her from this billboard:

Yes, that’s her. Hamilton was a surfer who got bit by a shark and lost her arm. But she loved surfing so much, that she learned how to surf with one arm, and she has been out in the waves ever since. It would have been so soo easy for Hamilton to never surf again. No one would have questioned her for not wanting to go back in the ocean ever again. But when you love to do something, you just can’t quit doing it.

Millennials always find a way to do what they want to do, and to keep fighting when they feel like they can’t. Millennials want to give up (all the time), but they know they can’t.

So here I am, recommitting to making my blog worthy for all of the amazing millennials out there. I’m inspired by all of the great millennials out there fighting to make their dreams come true. And my dream is to blog, so here I am.

Blogging is one of those activities that I can only refer to as a calling. Anyone can set up a blog (and very many people do) but it takes patience and determination to have maintain a blog, update it and keep regularly putting out updates. Most people don’t have the commitment required which is why so many blogs languish and die.

Well done on reaffirming your commitment to your blog :)
