There are a lot of things I don’t understand. I don’t understand why caffeine doesn’t help me stay awake and why people think Jeff Foxworthy is funny. But there is one thing I really, really don’t understand, and that’s Super Bowl ads.
Why would any advertising agency in the entire world recommend a $3 million 30-second ad for their client? Do they know how far $3 million goes? You could hire a whole social media team, start a blog, answer support questions on Twitter and engage with your audience on Facebook all for WAY under $3 million. Yet, ad agencies continue to recommend that their clients advertise during the Super Bowl.
Also, if I were going to pay for a $3 million Super Bowl ad it would have to be the most innovative, creative ad that ever existed. I would want it to drive traffic to my site, engage users in a next-step and encourage a larger conversation. It wouldn’t be enough to have Danica Patrick in my commercial telling people to go to GoDaddy.com, it would need to be something that actually excited my customers to get up and do something. (PS: What part of GoDaddys research showed that they should advertise only to men? Last time I checked women bought domain names too.)
I just can’t think of any reason why with all of the communication tools that exist today that people still advertise during the Super Bowl. Help me out readers, explain to me why??
Even though I really don’t understand it, I will admit that I loved this commercial:

Even so, the ad didn’t make me do anything. I definitely won’t eat more Doritos because of it.
